3 red-hot Astros minor leaguers who pushed hard for a September call-up

MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28 on September 1st. For the Houston Astros, that means much-needed reinforcements are on the way. Houston had an excellent week, winning four of six in New York, grabbing two each against the Yankees and Mets, and getting themselves a two-game lead in the division.

That doesn't erase the struggles they were having in the weeks prior, which included a 3-6 stretch and six straight games of not scoring five runs. Every team gets one extra hitter and one pitcher for the final month, with players going up and down. Here are three players who have been hot in Triple-A and tried their best to stand out in a crowded room as reinforcement options.

Miguel Ullola

The 24-year-old reliever has had three different stints with the major league team this season, but has only made four appearances. Ullola's last MLB inning came on August 18, but around that, he is in the midst of an eight-game scoreless streak in Triple-A. On top of that, in 30 relief appearances since the start of June, Ullola has only allowed earned runs in three. He has 14 strikeouts to four walks in August. Ullola should be the first pitcher called back to the majors on Sept. 1.

Cavan Biggio

The son of Astros Hall of Famer Craig Biggio has been in Triple-A Sugar Land all season, and while it hasn't been the strongest season, he has gotten hot at the right time. In the last 15 days, Biggio has a .910 OPS. He's got two home runs, three doubles, and eight RBI in that span, and has walked 13 times while only striking out 10. Biggio is a useful piece because he can play first, second, third, and the corner outfield positions. He could allow the Astros to get a lot of players a day of rest for the playoff push and October.

Trenton Brooks

The 31-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Astros back in June. He has just 37 games of major league action in his books, spread between 2024 and 2025. He's a left-handed outfielder who has really found his swing in the past month.

In August, Brooks hit .292 with a .415 on-base percentage and .415 slugging percentage. While he won't be one to hit a lot of home runs, he gets on base at a really high clip, drawing 14 walks while only striking out 10 times in the month. Since the All-Star break, Houston outfielder's 77 WRC+ ranks 28th, and the .273 on-base percentage is last. Calling up a player like Brooks should be a priority.
