The 2026 MLB season is winding down, and the Houston Astros are in the thick of the playoff race. They haven't been able to create any separation from the Rangers in the division, and the Mariners are lurking right behind them. It's going to take a whole team effort to ensure they secure their spot in the postseason and it will be anything but easy.

Of course, they will need players like Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Pena to keep producing, but it's more than just them. Other players are going to need to step up over the final month. Here are the most important.

Christian Walker

The 35-year-old first baseman hasn't been what Houston hoped they were getting when they signed him prior to the 2025 season. 2026 has been a step better, but they are going to need vintage Christian Walker in the final month.

Walker showed in Arizona that he was capable of mid-30s level home run production with OPS's in the low-.800s. If Walker can find that form for one month, he would become the perfect lineup protection for Alvarez, and make the heart of the order much scarier.

Dalton Varsho

Varsho was acquired at the deadline to be an upgrade in the lineup in centerfield. From the start of the season until the trade deadline, Houston centerfielders ranked 27th in WRC+. After the trade deadline, Houston centerfielders rank 26th in WRC+, but its dropped from 71 to 53.

Varsho has an 85 WRC+ this season and posted a 123 WRC+ in 2025. He has the ability to be productive at the plate. If he can at least be close to a league-average bat the rest of the season, it would go a long way to helping Houston take control of the division.

Bryan Abreu

It hasn't been the sharpest season for the 29-year-old reliever. His 4.17 ERA is his highest since 2021, and he has a -0.3 fWAR. His last 30 games have been much better, with a 1.78 ERA in 30.1 innings, and Houston is going to need that level of production in the final month. Josh Hader has been elite this season after missing the first two months, and having Abreu lock down the eighth in front of him creates one of the most formidable setup man-closer duos in all of baseball.

Peter Lambert

In his first year in Houston, the 29-year-old righty has been Houston's most consistent starter, except in the last 30 days. On the season, Lambert has a 3.68 ERA in 122.1 innings with a 2.1 fWAR. In the last month, Lambert has 24 1/3 innings with a 6.29 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and .281 opponent batting average. Getting back to the Lambert from the beginning of the season will help stabilize an inconsistent starting rotation.
