Astros rookie Spence's 3 HR game is everything we love about baseball

The life of a statistician can seem boring. We track numbers over long periods of time. We look for trends and we try to get a whole picture view. The fancy term that gets applied is the term aggregate. However, life does not occur in the aggregate. The majesty of life comes in moments, and Lucas Spence had himself a moment on Thursday night.

Even when you take away the ramifications of the performance itself, there are the simple implications in a vacuum. To put it simply, it was one of the one or two best performances from a rookie in franchise history. J.R. Towles had himself a day as a rookie when he drove in eight runs against the St. Louis Cardinals. That is the only day that can possibly compete with Spence's three home runs.

When you add in the magnitude of the moment it gets that much more special. The Astros don't win the game without Spence going nuts. If the Astros don't win the game then they likely lose the division down one game with three to go. Obviously, as I write this the outcome is still very much in doubt, but it would not be a stretch to suggest that Spence's heroics saved the season.

However, that begs the question of who Lucas Spence is exactly? The truth is likely neither the player that floundered before Thursday night or the player that showed up on Thursday night. This is why the aggregate exists in the first place. You look at the minor league numbers and adjust accordingly. Below are what he has done at the minor league level while in Houston. The numbers will be combined for each year because he has jumped levels.

He had fewer than 100 plate appearances in 2024 because it was his draft year. Again, we are looking at small sample sizes there. The 2025 and 2026 numbers are more indicative of what he is as a prospect. He is like many of Dana Brown's prospects. He brings a lot of tools to the park and those tools play up when he makes contact. However, the swing and miss is the key element in his game.

That makes him similar to Brice Matthews and Zach Cole as prospects. We saw both of them have auspicious debuts when they came up in 2025. It is always fun to see young players explode onto the scene, but this is why we revert back to the minor league numbers as a guide for what we think might happen. If you are striking out 25 percent or more at the minor league level, that percentage is likely to only get higher in the big leagues.

More than one thing can be true at the same time. Players can be extremely talented and still have holes in their game they can't fill. It is also true that most players do not fully succeed in their first bite at the apple. This is why the center field situation in Houston will be so interesting next year. You have Matthews and Cole that have succeeded in short spurts, but mostly failed before. Yet, they still have those tools and could find it at any moment.

What is most likely though is that none of them find it. That is the life of the prospect. Most of them will not become solid regulars at the big league level. In a draft of 20 players, you are doing good if two or three stick. However, for one glorious day Lucas Spence was the best baseball player on the planet. It is something he will be able to tell his grandchildren and I'm sure with every telling of the story the homers will go further and mean more. He will always have his day no matter what happens from here.
