Well, the day that Houston Astros fans have been waiting for has arrived, the day that active roster expands all the way up from 25 to 40 players. In the past, the Astros have used this as an opportunity to get some prospects some major league experience and have a few extra arms in the bullpen. The experts have been cautioning that Astros fans should not expect any significant additions to the Astros because they are playoff contenders this year. The current roster is 28 players with some call-ups today, but could soon be up to 30 players.

Some might wonder why you can’t call up too many players when you are in the playoff hunt? Many teams feel might feel differently, but I can imagine the core players losing critical at-bats to break out of a slump could be an issue. Trying to get enough innings for everyone to be sharp, having a crowded clubhouse, and risking the possibility of disrupting the culture built through the season.

Besides one player who is already on the team, don’t expect any other players not on the 40-man roster to be added in September. Those of you who are begging for Tyler White, A.J. Reed, or Mark Appel, you might be a little disappointed. These guys will be up at some point next year, but the Astros have some players they need to protect from the Rule V draft this offseason.

The Astros also want their young players to gain playoff experiences, so they come up with an expectation of winning when they get to Houston. So, who did get the call?
