Houston Astros Minor League Week In Review: April 20-27
Another great week of Houston Astros minor league baseball is in the books. A few guys put up monster numbers this week. Let’s take a look at the top performers.
AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (10-7) went 3-3 this week
- L.J. Hoes, OF: .458 BA (11-24), 3 R, 5 2B, 6 RBI, SB
- Preston Tucker, OF: .267 BA (8-30), 5 R, 3 HR, 11 RBI
- Domingo Santana, RF: .421 BA (8-19), 5 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI
- Jon Singleton, 1B: .280 (7-25), 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI
- Tommy Shirley, LHP: 10.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 11 SO
- Brady Rodgers, RHP: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
Preston Tucker has yet to be stopped. He now has 8 HR, 26 RBI in only 18 games. It’s a great sign to see Santana have a nice week as he initially struggled to start the season. Singleton is showing the continued power with two more homers this week. One of the breakout players from last year, Tommy Shirley, put together two good starts and has a 2.70 ERA this season. Rodgers struggled in his first few outings but pitched nicely this week.
AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (12-4) went 5-1 this week
- Carlos Correa, SS: .435 BA (10-23), 8 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, SB
- Conrad Gregor, 1B: .389 BA (7-18), 3 R, 2 2B, 3B, RBI,
- Tyler White, DH: .333 BA (4-12), 5 R, 2B, 3 RBI, 9 BB/4 SO, SB
- Roberto Pena, C: .462 BA (6-13), 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI
- Mark Appel, RHP: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO
- Lance McCullers, RHP: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO
- Chris Devenski, RHP: 6.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 SO
- Aaron West, RHP: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Correa put up a monster week and is dominating AA pitching right now. He is hitting .375 with 4 HR, 19 RBI in 15 games. Pena, known for his glove, put together a few good games this week as well. Tyler White got some playing time and did well drawing nine walks in only five games. McCullers if off to a terrific start. He has yet to allow an earned run and now has 21 K in only 14 IP. Devenski has also posted a 0.00 ERA in 15.1 IP with 14 K.
A+: Lancaster Jethawks (10-8) went 4-3 this week
- Chase McDonald, 1B: .296 BA (8-27), 5 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI
- J.D. Davis, 3B: .292 BA (7-24), 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI
- A.J. Reed, 1B: .292 BA (7-24), 6 R, 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI, 8 BB/4 SO
- Brett Phillips, CF: .308 BA (8-26), 5 R, 3 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI
- Troy Scribner, RHP: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Michael Feliz, RHP: 7.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 7 SO
Solid weeks from multiple players. Reed put together a solid week, and the 8 BB/4 SO is great to see. Phillips continues to hit well this season. Scribner had one start, and it was dominant. He has a 3.95 ERA with 4 BB/20 K in 13.2 IP this season. Michael Feliz had one good outing and one okay outing that combined for a decent week overall for him.
A: Quad Cities River Bandits (13-5) went 4-3 this week
- Alfredo Gonzalez, C: .462 BA (6-13), 2 R, 3B, 3 RBI, 4 BB/3 SO, SB
- Kristian Trompiz, SS: .348 BA (8-23), 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI
- Joseph Musgrove, RHP: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO
- Austin Chrismon, RHP: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO
- Daniel Mengden, RHP: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
The offense struggled some this week for the River Bandits, but they still managed to post a winning record. The 19-year-old Trompiz put together a nice week. He is hitting .280 so far in his first taste of full-season baseball. The pitching has been great. Musgrove continued his dominant start and now owns a 1.23 ERA with 1 BB/19 K in 14.1 innings. Mengden is also off to a great start with a 2.84 ERA and 1 BB/19 K in 12.2 innings so far.
Another successful minor league week in the books. Correa, McCullers, Phillips and many other prospects continue to play well. The future is bright and as always, go Astros!
