Star Performer of the Week Sept. 19-25

In a rare seven game week that featured both home and road games the Astros compiled a 3-4 record. No one who played in today’s game will be eligible for this week’s award because that game was such an embarrassment. That leaves a small number of players to choose from. This week’s runner-up is Wesley Wright. I have given Wright a lot of grief this season but he has really put together a nice little run as the left-handed bullpen specialist. Wright came through with three more scoreless appearances during the week.

This week’s award goes to one of Wright’s bullpen mates, Mark Melancon. The Astros closer had three scoreless appearances of his own this week. Melancon picked up a pair of saves and pitched a scoreless inning in yesterday’s 13 inning marathon. Melancon has allowed only one hit in 8 & 1/3 innings this month, chalking up 13 strikeouts along the way. Melancon now has a 7-4 record with 20 saves for the year.
