Star Performer of the Week: Trade Deadline Edition

The last week of July 2011 will long be remembered by the Astros and their fans. Ed Wade worked overtime dealing away established veterans in an attempt to replenish a weakened farm system. The jury will be out for a while on this one. Let’s just say Wade is not our Star Performer this week. Fans are generally discouraged at the moment, but the long term impact could turn out to be positive. Now that the dust has settled and all of the player moves are completed, let’s take a look at what happened on the field last week.

The Astros won two and lost five while playing in St. Louis and Milwaukee. Carlos Lee was hot at the start of the week but slumped later. The shuttle from AA Corpus Christi brings us this week’s honoree. Jose Altuve went 10 for 26 and is quickly becoming a fan favorite. The second baseman was the first of three position players to be promoted from the Hooks to the big club. Altuve started his career with a seven game hitting streak, tying the club record. J.D. Martinez and Jimmy Paredes have since joined Altuve with the Astros and should be seeing plenty of action in the immediate future.
