There may not be a more disappointing team in the American League than the Seattle Mariners. I'd try not to laugh at them, but they have 100% earned this mockery.
The Mariners were the national media's overwhelming favorite to win the AL West this season. ESPN but had them as the team that would be the biggest threat to the Los Angeles Dodgers' title reign. Not only that, but the self-proclaimed worldwide leader also pegged Mariners CF Julio Rodriguez as the 2026 AL MVP.
Over at Sports Illustrated, the Mariners were predicted to win the AL West and go to the World Series as well, with Julio Rodriguez winning AL MVP as well
Mariners fans couldn't help but gloat over their success against the Astros, especially early in the season when Houston was floundering. Seattle is 9-2 vs Houston this season, and it certainly gave Mariners fans hope they would win the division when they pounded the Astros in May and that they would catch them and pass them when they took 2 of 3 in August after Houston had a massive comeback win against them in the first game of the series.
Even Astros fans were waving the white flag against Seattle in May:

It’s been this way since 2023, the mariners treat this rivalry with urgency and seriousness, the Astros just don’t seem to care, especially not in 2026
Despite Seattle's dominance over the Houston Astros this season, they haven't been able to sustain winning against anyone else.
Some of the signs started near the trade deadline when Seattle fans were displeased with the team's lack of commitment, and are now taking the team to task about it:

For a team that started the season with World Series aspirations, one would think they would be more committed to the cause. This should have been especially true for a team that is dead last in the American League in runs scored and in batting average with runners in scoring position. Maybe getting more offense should have been a priority. Instead, they did what they usually do, stick their toe in the water and make marginal moves. Last season's deadline moves for Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor, as Seattle really went for it at the deadline, look like the aberration they were. They knew they needed to add, they chose to do essentially nothing.
In fact, not only are they the worst offense in the American League, they are also tenth in the AL in pitching ERA. What happened to the Mariners' vaunted pitching staff? Seattle's staff was considered to have taken a step back last year when the fell from having the best ERA in the AL in 2024 to the sixth best in 2025. Now they've fallen to tenth. Their choice at the deadline was to be conservative.
Despite being 9-2 against the Astros, they have no chance of catching them. Seattle is nine games under .500 and six games out of the division with 15 games to play. They are absolute toast. The final two games Seattle will play against the Astros are absolutely meaningless for them. Seattle is five games out of a wild card spot, and they are behind five other teams.
When it comes to the Mariners' chances of making the postseason, with a nod to former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, they've got NO CHANCE IN HELL.
Astros fans, pour one out for the Seattle Mariners' season, but don't pour out anything worth drinking. The 2026 Mariners aren't worthy of that.
