In the 2025 MLB Draft, the Astros did something they hadn't done in a decade: select a high school position player in the first round. That selection was infielder Xavier Neyens, who is already looking like a promising pick. Neyens was seen as one of the highest potential hitters in the draft class thanks to his power and patience combination, which he put on full display during the 2026 season.

Neyens opened the season in Single-A and put on a clinic, crushing 14 home runs, stealing 16 bases and drawing an incredible 79 walks in just 68 games. That was good for an insane .449 on-base percentage and .911 OPS. His impressive performance earned him a promotion to High-A, where he continued to produce despite being three years younger than the average player, adding six more home runs and drawing another 35 walks in 35 games.

MiLB Leading Numbers

Neyens finished the season with an impressive 24.5% walk rate, the highest mark in all of Minor League Baseball among hitters with at least 400 plate appearances. The walk rate helped him post an impressive .429 on-base percentage overall between both levels.

Neyens' elite patience and strike-zone discipline, combined with his well-above-average power, make him one of the most intriguing hitters in Minor League Baseball. At just 19 years old, he finished the season with 20 home runs and an incredible 114 walks in only 103 games.

The Potential Risk?

Xavier Neyens does come with some risk, however. Over those 103 games, he struck out 155 times. It's worth noting that his swinging-strike percentage was a respectable 9.9%. His patient approach likely contributed to some of those strikeouts, as he swung at just 30.1% of the pitches he saw in 2026. For comparison, Mike Trout led the major leagues with a 16.9% walk rate while swinging at 39.8% of the pitches he saw.

For Neyens, the ceiling is incredibly high. Big-time power combined with an extremely patient approach? We've seen players have plenty of success with that combination before. But for Neyens, a few small adjustments to his approach could lead to huge results, both for him and the Astros.

Selective aggressiveness will be extremely important for Neyens moving forward. While strikeouts will likely always be part of his makeup as a prospect, an improved contact rate could lead to some eye-popping numbers. If he can make that adjustment, Neyens has a chance to continue climbing through the Astros' system and potentially establish himself as a top-50 prospect in all of baseball.
