On the Rise: Chris Devenski

Astros fans who aren’t very familiar with our minor league system probably won’t know who Chris Devenski is, but after reading this little piece you should definitely know his name. Devenski has been the ace of the Corpus Christi Hooks this year and was named a Texas League All-Star. He has become one of the best pitchers in the Astros farm system, and here are the numbers to prove it:

  • 7-2 record
  • 1.92 ERA
  • 1.02 WHIP
  • 76 strikeouts (8.1 SO/9)

For whatever reason, Devenski has been stuck in AA this whole season despite all of his successes on the mound. The other prospects who had those type of AA numbers, Vincent Velasquez, and Lance McCullers, bypassed Fresno completely and reported straight to the Astros. And Mark Appel, whose ERA was way higher, was even promoted before Devenski.

It’s really difficult for me to report any real rumors or anything on Devenski, because there’s not much out there on him. But, his AA numbers caught my eye pretty fast, so you can bet that other scouts and general managers are taking notice. With the Astros seemingly not prioritizing his major league track, don’t be surprised to see his name included in a package for a major league player at the deadline. Other teams might be seeing what I’m seeing and have AAA plans for him soon.
