Astros call up Gregorio Petit; Anthony Bass sent to AAA
The Astros have finally granted one of my wishes. Infielder Gregorio Petit has been called up to the big leagues. Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that Anthony Bass has been sent to AAA Oklahoma City.
The Astros needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Petit. They did so by moving RHP Matt Albers to the 60-day disabled list. That in itself is not exciting news.
Petit should get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop — I would hope. Marwin Gonzalez is nursing a sore hammy and could really use some rest. I still wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up going on the D.L. Enrique Gonzalez is another option at short, but with all of the injuries to Astros outfielders “Kike” has been forced to play out of position.
Petit is has a reputation for being a solid defender and has suddenly become a threat on offense as well. After hitting .292/.344/.380 in the Padres organization last season, Petit signed as a minor league free agent over the winter. This season, he has posted a .297/.340/.457 slash line with 10 homers and 43 RBIs for Oklahoma City.
