Corpus Christi Hooks riding 5 game win streak into home opener

The Corpus Christi Hooks enter Thursday night’s home opener on a 5-game winning streak. The Astros AA club plays host to the Tulsa Drillers for a 3-game set starting at 7:10 P.M at Whataburger Field.

The Drillers beat Corpus Christi 5-4 in last Thursday’s season opener in Tulsa. But since that time the Hooks have won five straight contests to take the lead in the Texas League’s Southern Division. Jiovanni Mier‘s eleventh inning homer on Tuesday propelled the Hooks to their most recent victory, a 7-6 win over Springfield (Cardinals). Mier also helped get the streak started by doubling in a run in the ninth inning of Friday’s game in Springfield.

In addition to Mier, the Hooks have been getting solid offensive production from Delino DeShields, Preston Tucker, and M.P. Cokinos. Thomas Shirley, Aaron West, David Rollins, and Luis Cruz have excelled on the mound in the early going. The four have been utilized in the “piggy-back” system that is being used to help manage the innings of some pitching prospects while also allowing the organization to get a look at a larger quantity of arms.

Travis Ballew and Andrew Robinson have performed admirably out of ‘pen during the first week and look to keep Keith Bodie’s team atop the standings during their 6-game homestand.

Ross Seaton gets tonight’s start against Tulsa’s Daniel Winkler. Seaton teamed up with Cruz in Saturday’s 7-4 win over the same Tulsa Drillers team.
