Brett Wallace clears waivers

The Astros decision to dangle Brett Wallace as trade bait/waiver wire fodder has been met with little to no interest from other teams. Wallace has reportedly cleared waivers and it appears as though he will be staying with the Astros organization.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweets that Wallace will be headed to Kissimmee with the rest of the Astros hopefuls and trying to win his old job back. Having been passed over by the rest of the league, the Astros can also send Wallace back to AAA as an insurance policy if the other 1B candidates struggle.

I’m a little surprised that Wallace wasn’t claimed off waivers. There are several teams that could use some help at the 1B position. But the fact that Brett was out of minor league options appears to have been the sticking point for those clubs. Once again, Jeff Luhnow shows that he knows exactly what he is doing.

After designating him for assignment the Astros expressed an interest in keeping Wallace in the organization. Things worked out in that respect and it looks like Wallace will get at least one more chance to make the team. Who knows? This could be the season when Wallace finally lives up to his potential.
