Astros News & Notes for 7/3

According to Brian McTaggart the Astros have signed their third round draft pick, pitcher Kent Emanuel, pending a physical. The left-hander pitched on Friaday night’s for the University of North Carolina this season, helping the Tar Heels reach the semi-finals in this year’s College World Series. Emanuel’s signing bonus is reportedly right in line with the slot value of $747,700.

Infielder Ronald Torreyes, acquired from the Cubs organization yesterday, has been assigned to AA Corpus Christi. Torreyes, who had been playing 2B for Tennessee, will join the Hooks tonight in Springfield.

First overall pick Mark Appel will make his organizational debut Friday when he takes the mound for Class-A Tri-City.

Last year’s top pick, Carlos Correa, has been voted in by the fans to take part in this year’s Futures Game. Correa will be on the World team that will oppose the U.S.A. squad that includes George Springer and Delino DeShields Jr. The game will be aired on ESPN2 on Sunday, July 14 — live from Citi Field in New York.

Carlos Pena is back in the Astros lineup tonight after missing the last three games due to a death in the family. Pena is DHing and batting fifth against his former Rays teammates. Maybe Pena can help the Astros end their 23 inning scoreless drought.

Bud Norris faces Roberto Hernandez (formerly known as Fausto Carmona) in tonight’s game. Norris is 0-3 in his last five starts — even though he has pitched well.

It has been 21 days since Jim Crane said an agreement between CSN Houston and major carriers could come within 30 days. Don’t hold your breath.
