The Astros have placed deposed closer Francisco Cordero on the 15-day disabled list with a “toe injury.” Apparently toe injury is secret code for “can’t get batters out.” Cordero has been completely ineffective (due to his toe injury… chuckle, chuckle) since being acquired from Toronto last month.
Mickey Storey has been called up from Oklahoma City and will join the Astros bullpen. Storey has put together some outstanding numbers in the PCL in his 26 year-old season. Storey has a 1.17 WHIP and has averaged ten strikeouts per nine innings in 38 appearances covering 65 innings. Storey has good control (1.9 BB/9 IP this season & 2.5 for his career) and should be a welcomed addition to a beleaguered Houston relief corps.
Brad Mills has stated that he will go with a closer by committee in Cordero’s absence. Mills has also hinted that Wilton Lopez has earned a shot at closing games. Storey will be looking to make his big league debut this weekend in Atlanta.
