Astros claim Chuckie Fick
The Astros have claimed right-handed reliever Chuckie Fick off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. Fick will be added to the active roster for tonight’s game and a corresponding roster move will have to be made. Jeff Luhnow originally drafted Fick in the 15th round back in 2007.
Fick, 26, stands 6′ 5′” tall and weighs 185 pounds. He isn’t a power pitcher. His fastball averages 89 m.p.h. Fick’s arsenal also includes a slider, curve, and changeup. He has a career WHIP of 1.253 in 199 minor league games. Fick has spent most of the last three years at the AAA level and also appeared in two games for the Cardinals earlier this season.
Fick will join a beleaguered Astros bullpen that has failed to record a save since the departure of closer Brett Myers. Expect another reliever to be removed from the active roster to make room for the newest Astro. My guess is someone like Francisco Cordero will go to the disabled list with a mysteriously sore elbow.
