The Salt River Rafters claimed the Arizona Fall League championship with a 9-3 victory over the Surprise Saguaros tonight in Scottsdale. David Nick‘s bases loaded triple keyed a five-run seventh inning that broke the game open for Salt River. Nick, a second baseman in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, was thrilled to get the win in front of a crowd comprised of mostly Diamondbacks fans.

Each team in the AFL is comprised of players representing five major league clubs. The Salt River squad is made up of players from the Astros, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Rockies, and Tigers systems. Catcher Jason Castro and outfielder Jake Goebbert represented the Astros with one hit each in tonight’s game. Astros prospect Josh Zeid came out of the bullpen and pitched one-third of an inning in the win..
Surprise was the favorite going into tonight’s game after posting a league best 26-10 record for the season. Salt River finished the year with a record of 22-16. Astros fans now have a reason to celebrate. We’ll take anything we can get after suffering through such a dismal season.
