Star Performer of the Week for Aug. 8-14

The Astros had another rough week on the road, winning one before losing six in a row. The team struggled in every facet of the game, hitting, pitching, and defense. So it’s hard to pull a winner from the muck this week. Humberto Quintero gets honorable mention again. “Q” had four hits and drove in two runs in only twelve at-bats.

Jose Altuve is this week’s runner-up. Altuve went 11 for 31, getting at least one hit in every game. For the second straight week my Star Performer Award goes to J.D. Martinez. The Astros new leftfielder had seven hits in 28 at-bats, including two homeruns. Martinez scored five runs and drove in three during the week. He provided most of the offense in the team’s only win and was the only Astro to drive in a run in the series against the Dodgers. Martinez has shown that he has the power to hit the ball out of any stadium. The short distance to Minute Maid Park’s Crawford Boxes should play right into his game. I look for a big homestand for the rookie starting tonight against the Cubs. Who knows? Maybe Martinez can win a third straight Star Performer Award.
