Down on the Farm: 4/11 Recap

Only the Corpus Christi Hooks and Lancaster JetHawks played Monday night with both Lexington and Oklahoma City getting rained out. Both teams will play a double-header on today to make up the game. Both Corpus and Lancaster lost tonight with Corpus losing by 1 run once again 3-4, and Lancaster losing 14-8. First up are the Hooks.

Corpus Christi Hooks (1-4)

The Corpus Christi Hooks lost to the Nationals today by 1 run, making that all 4 games that they have lost being by 1 run. Kyle Greenwalt got the start and what has become a reoccurring trend with the Astros minor league starters failed to pitch out of the 5^th inning. Here is your game box score recap:

Batting

1.)    Sutil (SS) – 3-4, 2B, .500 avg. – This guy has really gotten off to a good start. He has always been regarded as a good defensive shortstop, but a below average offensive shortstop. Hopefully this is a sign that Sutil has put it all together.

2.)    Simunic (RF) – 0-3, .000 avg.

3.)    Paredes (2B) – 0-4, 3 K’s, .250 avg. – Had a bad night with 3 strikeouts, but did hit well in his first series of the year.

4.)    J.D. Martinez (LF) – 1-4, .333 avg.

5.)    Steel (DH) – 2-4, 3B, SO, .136 avg. – Hopefully this game finally gets him going.

6.)    Barnes (CF) – 1-4, SO, .222 avg.

7.)    Van Ostrand (1B) – 0-4, .190 avg.

8.)    Flores (3B) – 1-4, RBI, .227 avg.

9.)    Esposito (C) – 0-4, SO, .000 avg.

Pitching

1.)    Greenwalt – 4.1 IP, 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 6.23 ERA – His status as a prospect is quickly fading.

2.)    Leon – 2.2 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA

3.)    Wolf – 1 IP, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 1 strikeout, 0.00 ERA

Lancaster JetHawks (2-3)

The JetHawks lost to the Giants on Monday night 14-8. The JetHawks had a good day offensively, but their pitching staff was unable to keep the runs off the board. Jose Altuve went 3-4 and continues to hit well. What is confusing about that however is that Altuve has the highest batting average on the team, but has hit 9^th in all but 1 game so far. Here’s the game recap:

Batting

1.)    Austin (CF) – 2-3, 2 BB, SB, .278 avg. – Good to see him drawing some walks. As a speed guy, a high OBP is vital to his success.

2.)    Villar (SS) – 2-3, 2B, .400 avg. – Continuing his hot start at the plate

3.)    Goebbert (RF) – 1-2, 4 RBI, BB, .077 avg.

4.)    Hinze (1B) – 0-4, BB, .111 – The slugging first baseman is off to a slow start

5.)    Meyer (3B) – 1-4, .353 avg.

6.)    Heath (DH) – 1-5, .167 avg. – Also off to a slow start. Maybe it was a good idea he wasn’t promoted aggressively to Corpus.

7.)    Wates (LF) – 0-5, .158 avg. – Touted as an offensive minded player is off to a slow start at the plate.

8.)    Garcia (C) – 1-4, .214 avg.

9.)    Altuve (2B) – 3-4, HR, RBI, .526 avg. – Great production from the number 9 spot.

Pitching

1.)    Doran – 4.2 IP, 7 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 5.79 ERA – Once again a starter was unable to pitch out of the 5^th inning.

2.)    Musick – 2.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 1.42 ERA – a decent outing, but not as impressive as his last outing.

3.)    Ness – 0.1 IP, 5 runs but only 1 was earned, 3 walks, 3.86 ERA – really struggled with his control in this outing.

4.)    Alvino – 1.1 IP, 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, 10.80 ERA – Ouch

5.)    Trinidad – 0.1 IP, 0.00 ERA
