With less than a week to go until the Astros open the regular season, it’s time to size up the competition. I’ve already dedicated a post to each of the teams that reside in the N.L. Central thanks to some much needed help from a few of our FanSided writers. Today I’ll be going it alone as I preview the N.L. West, starting with the Astros Opening Day opponents, the Colorado Rockies.

Yesterday, MLB.com released its annual list of top 100 prospects in baseball. The A’s and Padres led the way landing six prospects apiece on the list. Although three of the A’s six came over in the Gio Gonzalez trade, it still gives both teams quite a bit to look forward to. Meanwhile, the Astros were represented with three players in the top 100. They are Jonathan Singleton (44), Jarred Cosart (61), and George Springer (84). I think these are good and fair selections by MLB, as I can’t see any of our other prospects making this list right now. However, I do disagree with some of the placement.

Word broke earlier in the week, as per Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown that the Reds are willing to trade top prospect 1B/OF, Yonder Alonso, for a #2 starter or a closer. Alonso was originally selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 2005 draft, but chose to attend college at the University of Miami. That gamble paid off as he was selected with the 7th overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2008 MLB draft. Since being drafted by the Reds, Alonso has been on an offensive tear. Throughout his time in the minors, he has put up an impressive .296/.374/.486 line and has hammered 36 home runs while driving in 179 runs.
