Angel Sanchez enters the 2012 season competing for a spot on the Astros roster as a backup infielder. The 28 year-old Sanchez should have a leg up on the competition thanks in part to a productive Winter League. Sanchez is a veteran of the Caribbean Winter Leagues and spent this off-season playing in his native Puerto Rico. Sanchez hit .293 for the winter but finished strong, hitting .421/.476/.632 over his last ten games. Sure it’s a small sample size but Sanchez has shown the ability to wield a hot bat from time to time. Sanchez had a nice hot streak after joining the Astros in 2010 and got off to a great start last season.

Astros players gaining valuable experience in Winter Leagues

Several young Astros are currently polishing their skills in Winter League Baseball action. Astros scouts have been busy this winter as well. Rhiner Cruz and Marwin Gonzalez impressed the Astros with their play this winter and were selected by Houston in the Rule 5 Draft.

Astros Rule 5 picks; What role will they play?

With the first pick in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft the Astros chose right-handed pitcher Rhiner Cruz from the New York Mets organization. The Astros also chose another pitcher, Marco Duarte, but traded him to Boston in exchange for shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. Both players will have to spend the entire season on the Astros roster or be offered back to their original organization. In full rebuild node, the Astros may decide to keep both players.
