Lefty reliever Fernando Abad has been optioned to AAA Oklahoma City. The Astros purchased the contract of right hander Fernando Rodriguez to take Abad’s spot in the bullpen. Abad had struggled to a 1-4 record in 22 relief appearances. The move was long overdue as Abad had compiled a 15.43 E.R.A. over his last ten outings. Rodriguez joins fellow rookies Aneury Rodriguez, Jose Valdez, and Sergio Escalona on the Houston pitching staff. Rodriguez has posted 29 strikeouts and a 1.29 E.R.A. in 21 innings at AAA Oklahoma City so far this season. Rodriguez, who turns 27 next month, has spent nine seasons in the minors and appeared in one game for the Los Angeles Angels in 2009. Rodriguez has been used as both a starter and a reliever in his minor league career.

As most of you know the Astros new AAA affiliate this season will be the Oklahoma City Redhawks. The Astros have swapped AAA cities with the Texas Rangers, ending their eleven year relationship with Round Rock. The players will stay in their respective organizations but will play their home games in a new location. The move was prompted by Rangers President Nolan Ryan’s partial ownership of the Round Rock franchise. Oklahoma City and Round Rock both reside in the South Division of the American Conference of the Pacific Coast League. It looks like this could turn into a nice little rivalry. The move should broaden the Astros borders and create some new fans in Oklahoma. Older fans may remember that the Oklahoma City 89ers were the original AAA affiliate of Houston’s Major League franchise from 1962 to 1972.
