Marlins outlast Astros 5-4 in 11 innings

It was deja vu all over again in Miami as the Astros – Marlins game came down to the wire and ended in a 5-4 score for the third straight day. Miami salvaged the series by sandwiching a pair of extra inning wins around Saturday’s ninth inning meltdown. Hanley Ramirez was the star of the game for Miami, tying the game with a two-run dinger in the eighth and driving in the winning run with a hit in the eleventh.

Astros snatch victory from the jaws of defeat

The Astros staged an unlikely comeback off Marlins closer Heath Bell in the ninth inning on Saturday. The Houston offense went through three distinguishably different stages of effectiveness during the game. Jordan Schafer led off the first inning with a walk and came around to score for an early 1-0 lead. The Astros wasted several scoring opportunities over the first four innings, getting runners thrown out on the base paths and stranding several others. Then the Astros bats fell silent for innings five through eight, failing to record a single hit. Heath Bell entered the game in the ninth with Miami leading 4-1. That’s when things got interesting.

Marlins work overtime to beat Astros 5-4

It took extra innings for the Marlins to get their first home win of the season, and their first ever at Marlins Park. Gaby Sanchez drove in Chris Coghlan with the game winner as the clock struck eleven on the east coast. Miami native J.D. Martinez made history when he became the first player to hit a homerun in the new Marlins Park. It wasn’t just any homer either. It was a clutch eighth inning 2-run blast to tie the game. Martinez cleared the wall in left-center, an area that is quickly becoming known as the place where long fly balls go to die.
