Corpus Christi finishes first half with a win

The AA Corpus Christi Hooks finished the first half of the Texas League season with a 4-0 win over the San Antonio Missions. Jonathan Singleton started a 12th inning rally that plated four runs against the defending champs. Jared Cosart pitched seven shutout innings, striking out a season-high eight, and Arcenio Leon picked up the win with two scoreless frames. The Hooks are now 4-1 in extra-inning contests and finish the first half with a record of 37-33, quite an improvement over last year’s cellar-dwelling squad.

Astros Promote Jarred Cosart to AAA

During pre season, I wrote an article encouraging every Astros fan to “Adopt A Prospect”. The purpose was to follow one of your favorite Astros prospects and track their progression throughout the year. I chose Jarred Cosart who was promoted yesterday to AAA Oklahoma City. Cosart has made only four starts for AA Corpus Christi this year due to a blister issue on his pitching hand. He posted a 2.84 ERA with 13 walks and 18 strikeouts in 19 innings for the Hooks. Okalahoma City’s rotation will be down a starting pitcher when one is promoted to the big league club on Tuesday to replace Kyle Weiland‘s spot in the rotation. Weiland has been on the DL after having surgery for an infection in his right shoulder.

Will We Really Miss Hunter Pence?

As everyone knows, last year, the Astros traded their face of the franchise and RF in Hunter Pence to the Phillies for a package of top prospects including Jonathan Singleton, Jarred Cosart, Domingo Santana and Josh Zeid. Almost immediately after that trade, top prospect, J.D. Martinez was called up from AA Corpus Christi straight to the Astros. Martinez did more than hold his own as he batted .274 with 6 home runs and 35 rbi spread out over 226 plate appearances. Martinez will essentially take over for Hunter Pence although they will not play the same position as Pence is a RF, but I ask, will we really miss Hunter Pence’s production with the presence of J.D. Martinez?
