Notes: The Tampa Bay Rays announced that Wil Myers will be called up this Tuesday. Along with Myers, Mets prospect Zach Wheeler will also make his debut. This is important because it is clear the Super-two cutoff date effected both teams’ decisions to keep their prospects down in the minors past that date so they can be eligible for an extra year of arbitration. I brought this up in regards to Jarred Cosart. Several fans wanted to see Cosart make his debut earlier this year, but it never made sense to bring him up and lose an extra year of arbitration. With the date set to pass, a Cosart call-up could happen soon, however, Cosart needs to continue to pitch well and show the ability to command all his pitches. With the Astros rotation pitching well, a Cosart call-up may not transpire until an injury occurs (hope not) or a trade.

Notes: The amazing year of Jake Buchanan has been slowed a bit. After a brilliant start to the year, Buchanan has struggled in his last two starts. Buchanan had only given up six runs this whole season before allowing 11 runs in the last two outings. In the last 9.2 IP, Buchanan has allowed 19 hits and 11 ER. Buchanan’s ERA still stands at 1.99, but he is in desperate need a of good start the next time out on the mound.

Notes: It has been a very interesting season for David Rollins. Rollins has been a part of the tandem pitching in Lancaster, and has had a shaky season. However, his numbers as a reliever (when coming in the game as the second pitcher) have been a lot better than when he has started the game. As a starter, Rollins has amassed 32.1 IP with a 7.24 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and a .297 BAA. When pitching in relief, Rollins has thrown 29 IP, with a 1.24 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, and a .135 BAA. Rollins has done a great job not allowing base runners on in relief, and hasn’t allowed any long balls while in relief (6 allowed when starting). If the Astros choose to stop tandem pitching in Lancaster, I expect Rollins to be placed in the bullpen, as he has excelled there this season, and there is already tons of SP depth in the Astros system.

Notes: There has been a lot of talk in regards to Byron Buxton lately about how the Astros made the wrong pick. Well, many casual fans don’t realize the success Carlos Correa is having this year (as well as the fact the Astros were able to sign both Lance McCullers Jr, Rio Ruiz, and others with those savings). As Astros GM Jeff Luhnow tweeted last night:

Carlos Correa is batting .304 with 44 RBI in full season A ball. He doesn’t turn 19 until late September.

So there you have it. Correa has been playing very well, and is just 18 years old this year. Correa has all the makings of a star, and I can’t wait to see this guy in an Astros uniform!
