Astros: It’s time for an Astros centered talk show on AM radio!

With the potential of the 2017 Houston Astros, it’s time for a baseball centered talk show in Houston!

The Houston Astros are at the least, playoff contenders in 2017. At most, they will be World Series Champions like Sports Illustrated predicted. There was some hype after the 2015 playoff run before the 2016 season. However, a rough April possibly cost the Astros from winning the hearts of fans following 2015’s magic. This year, the Stros could be sitting pretty at the top of the AL West.

Brian McTaggart, a reporter who has covered the Astros for a long time, has been vocal about the lack of baseball talk on the radio. Instead of hyping up what could be a dynasty in the making, the people on the radio are talking about the NFL Draft or the Quarterback issue. Granted, Houston is a football town, going back to the Houston Oilers’ time. But we want our baseball talk too.

Certain radio hosts feel confident about the Astros to mention them during broadcasts, and others don’t. One of those people is no longer employed at a radio station, but it’s time to bring back Astros talk. Especially during the offseason as us, die-hard fans, ponder the moves the front office is going to make.

Current Astros talk shows.

The Stros do a good job working with Sports Talk 790 to do a weekly show in the offseason called Astroline. Robert Ford and Steve Sparks take turns interviewing current and past Astros stars. The names they get on the show is impressive, but it doesn’t really get too deep into opinions on the team.

This is why Brandon Del Castillo and I created @TalkingStros, to have a year-round weekly Astros talk show. Broadcast on Saturday’s.  Many people think of us as a Podcast, but we do broadcast live and love interacting with our listeners. On Talking Stros, we also get some guests to join the show, as well as speculate what the next move will be. We are both big Texans and Rockets fans, but our hearts bleeds blue and orange. We talk Astros baseball when no one else does.

After a year of broadcasting over internet radio, we are looking to move to one of two major Houston AM stations. With all good decisions, you have to be patient, and make sure you make the right choice. The plan is to make that decision at some point today. Those of you who have listened to Talking Stros, it’s obvious what one of the stations is. The other station, I will not name yet.

With every good product, there was a beginning. Talking Stros wouldn’t have ever been around if Cris Roth, the owner of KTXF-db, didn’t read my articles on CTH. Like many people around, he saw a need for a Stros talk show. Roth reached out to me to do a show and I agreed. Brandon was more than excited to jump on, and I couldn’t have done this without him.

Jeremy Booth of Program 15 listened to one of the shows and thought that this was something he wanted to become part of. Through Booth, we have learned so much about the ins and outs of baseball. He wanted to join the show and talk Astros baseball weekly. One of the most common topics we discussed was A.J. Reed, who ended up training with Booth this offseason. He knows his stuff.

However, Booth is the first one to say that we know our stuff too. The 2017 season should be an exciting one, join the movement to get a baseball centered talk shows on the local airwaves.
