The Houston Astros, with the second pick of the 2015 MLB draft select Alex Bregman, a shortstop from LSU. While it was pretty well known that the Houston Astros were targeting a shortstop due to the lack of shortstop depth in the system. While many people thought that Brendan Rodgers would be the choice for the Astros, there was a buzz around Houston that Bregman would be the choice prior to the draft. He is currently one of the best Astros prospects in the system.

When the Astros drafted Bregman, his LSU Tigers were about to play in the College World Series. Astros fans got a chance to watch Bregman and his Derek Jeter like defensive/offensive plays in that series. Jeter might be a good comparison for him. During the interview, I asked him what player he would compare himself to with the restriction of it being Jeter? He couldn’t think of one, but maybe Jeter is a good comparison.

The 21-year-old shortstop has a problem, and that is the 20-year-old Carlos Correa, who is already one of the best shortstops in the game in his rookie season. There has been talk in the past that Correa will eventually be moved to third base. However, Correa has worked hard to stick at shortstop. Bregman also wants to stick at shortstop, so we will ask his opinion in the interview.

I recently did an Astros future at third base series where Bregman was selected as the winner for third base over Colin Moran, Tyler White, and J.D. Davis. You can read this here: Astros of the Future: Third Base (Round 2) J.D. Davis versus Alex Bregman.

In Bregman’s last ten games (not including his stats from last night), he has hit .308/ 5 R/ 9 RBI/ 4 SB. Last night following my interview with Bregman, he went 3-4 with a double and triple while driving in three runs in an 8-2 Lancaster win. He also stole his eighth base with Lancaster and has raised his batting average to .317.
