Arizona Fall League Summary: 10/17

On Thursday Peoria took on the Mesa Solar Sox and saw their record fall to 3-5 as they lost by a score of 6-1. It was not a good day offensively for the Javelinas as they managed only three hits for the game.

Perhaps the one positive that can be taken from this game, is that from an Astros perspective, there was not that much involvement in the game. Of the eight player delegation Houston sent, only Delino DeShields appeared in the loss.

But, that is where the good news ends.

DeShields got the start in center field and batted leadoff. He had four at bats in the game, and went 0-4 striking out all four times causing his average to drop to .278 on the fall. This is not the performance Houston was looking for out of DeShields so far this fall. But yes, it is only six games and 18 at bats, so I am not going to get too crazy over this.

I think regardless of how the speedster does this fall, he will be starting the season in AA Corpus Christi. Judging by Jeff Luhnow’s track record with prospects, I am not sure DeShields is really projected to be in the major leagues at all next season. However, he can certainly accelerate his timeline some with a strong performance for Peoria.
