Today, the Astros announced that they have signed C, Chris Snyder, formerly of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates, to a one year deal with a mutual option for a second year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Snyder is a Houston native having attended Spring Woods High School and the University of Houston.
Assuming Jason Castro is healthy, Snyder will serve as the primary backup to him. This could also spell the end of Humberto Quintero‘s time in Houston as a member of the Astros. A serious back injury limited Snyder to a career low 34 games with Pittsburgh last season. He hit 3 home runs, had 17 rbi and hit .271 during that time period. If healthy, Snyder could be a good backup catcher as he does have some pop in his bat. Looks like yet another good move for Jeff Luhnow!
