Astros Announce New Front Office Staff

The Astros are continuing their climb back to respectability as they made two new additions to their front office today. It was announced today  that the Astros have added Sig Mejdal and Stephanie Wilka to their new and improved front office. Mejdal will take over as the “Director of Decision Sciences” and Wilka will now be the “Coordinator of Amateur Scouting.” Wilka’s job is self explanatory but if anyone knows what a director of decision sciences does, please let me know. Either way, these are great hires for a team that was left in ruins by the circus that Drayton McLane and Tal Smith had here.

Sig Mejdal has worked with new Astros GM Jeff Luhnow with the St. Louis Cardinals since 2005 so its safe to say that Luhnow and Mejdal know each other pretty well, which would include their opinions on how to accurately judge and asses talent. He departs from St. Louis as their “Director of Amateur Draft Analytics”. Mejdal relies primarily on data driven decisions and should fit in very nicely here as that seems to be the approach Luhnow will be taking with our hometown team. Wilka has previously worked with the Dodgers and Red Sox in an unknown capacity. It has been confirmed that ESPN’s Keith Law recently applied for several positions with the Astros but it is unknown if he will be offered a job. Either way, these are two terrific hires as it moves us past the Drayton McLane era even farther, which is always a good thing. Building a great team starts in the front office. You have to have people making smart decisions consistently and these two hires are smart decisions. Folks, the days of feeling like we are smarter than the Astros front office appear to be over.
