Astros players gaining valuable experience in Winter Leagues

Several young Astros are currently polishing their skills in Winter League Baseball action. Astros scouts have been busy this winter as well.  Rhiner Cruz and Marwin Gonzalez impressed the Astros with their play this winter and were selected by Houston in the Rule 5 Draft.

What the Heck, Bobby? provides us with another Winter League update. Click on the page below to see how our youngsters did this weekend.

Other Astros pitchers that are working this winter include Fernando Abad, David Carpenter, Dallas Keuchel, Arcenio Leon, Aneury Rodriguez, Henry Sosa, Henry Villar, and Josh Zeid.

Two players that have been particularly impressive are Jose Altuve and Brian Bogusevic. Both are hitting well above .300 and making their case to be every day players for the Astros in 2012. Altuve has been very productive while playing in his native Venezuela. Bogusevic is among the Dominican League leaders in several offensive categories. Bogusevic, who started his career as a pitcher, has taken it upon himself to work overtime to keep improving his game. His hard work appears to be paying off. Bogey has to be considered the favorite to open the season as the Astros starter in RF against right-handed pitchers.

Thanks again to Jayne at What the Heck, Bobby? for keeping us up to date on the Winter League activity of Astros players.
