Jason Castro has foot surgery

by Astros

Here we go again- another year, and another surgery for Astros catcher Jason Castro. On Friday Castro underwent surgery on his left foot and will be sidelined for approximately three months. That means Castro will probably miss the first week or two of Spring Training.

Alyson Footer reports that Castro’s injury is similar to the one suffered by Jeff Keppinger in 2010. Keppinger tried to avoid surgery and wound up missing an extended amount of time. It would appear as though the Astros learned their lesson with Kepp and took a more aggressive treatment plan with their young backstop. Castro apparently suffered the injury in the AFL Championship Game on November 17.

As a result of the injury Humberto Quintero could get more playing time. The Astros recently signed Quintero to a one-year $1 million deal, avoiding arbitration.

Astros can not, CAN NOT, begin the season with Q and Corporan again. They need to get another catcher just in case he isn't ready, Chris Synder is still out there and would be a perfect backup catcher. Oh and Mark Trumbo does not count.

Really worried he is becoming a bit injury prone, need to make sure he is healthy.

Well technically, we did sign Craig Tatum so....

He's basically a poor mans Carlos Corporan

LEXthePEX Chris Snyder would be awesome and I think he's from Houston, but he'd come at a price we're not willing to pay.

I worried a little because it seems like Castro is dangerously close to landing in the "often injured" category. Another leg/foot injury for a player that plays such a demanding position seems like a very bad omen.

I think Castro is already in the "often injured" category, or as I like to call it, the "Tracy McGrady" category. I know its only two injuries but since as a catcher, he will be squatting the entire time, he can ill afford to constantly have leg issues as you said. This is a big year for Castro.

I was kinda hoping Castro would be given time to work back through the minors anyways so I don't see this as that bad. Unless he gets less time to work in Spring Training and they put him in the Bigs anyways.
