J.D. Martinez is an RBI machine

by Astros

Last night J.D. Martinez drove in three runs in the Astros 8-2 win over Pittsburgh. The rookie now has 29 RBIs in 29 big league games. His 28 RBIs for the month is an Astros rookie record. Martinez has a nice .295/.331/.518 line in 112 at-bats since being called up from AA Corpus Christi.

Martinez has a beautiful swing that some have compared to that of Albert Pujols. I’m not saying that Martinez is the next Pujols, but the mechanics of their swings are strikingly similar. Many pundits were skeptical when the Astros started calling up players from AA. It’s not really that uncommon. In fact, Pujols played only a handful of games at AAA and he has done pretty well for himself. Martinez, Jose Altuve, and Henry Sosa all had huge performances in last night’s victory.

The Astros have now won three straight. J.A. Happ will be on the mound tonight when the Astros go for the sweep against the Pirates. James McDonald gets the start for Pittsburgh. McDonald has struggled on the road this season, going 4-5 with a 5.35 ERA.

To me Martinez's swing is actually a little unorthodox. This is mainly how he starts his swing though, I'm not disagreeing with you about once his swing gets going, but how he gets started is definitely awkward. For one he almost turns his whole back to the pitcher, and he is also the only guy I have ever seen who actually takes a negative stride. He actually strides backwards before he starts swinging. Those two reasons were actually why Martinez slid all the way to the 20th round for the Astros in the 2009 draft. Scouts were not sold on his swing mechanics whatsoever.
